The folkloric vine structure for this print crosses traditional Scandinavian designs I admired at the Nordiska muséet in Stockholm with foreboding mesas and jagged key shapes I encountered at Arcosanti, Arizona. There, way out in the desert, Paolo Soleri attempted to engineer a city, and a way of life, that might accommodate severely diminished environmental resources. His "earth cast" campus is a jumble of ancient structures—amphitheaters, domes, and medieval warrens—that imbue his plan for the future with the best of the past.
